Assistant Medical Director Dan Phillips, MD.
Dr. Phillips is currently the Assistant Medical Director for Person County EMS and has been involved in various aspects of emergency medicine and fire/rescue for over 45 years.
Dan got involved in EMS as a rescue squad was being formed in his home town in northern WV in 1972. He worked the first shift of the Marion County Rescue Squad, and over the next several years served in a variety of leadership positions.
His career has been diverse, including:
-an army medic from 1973-1976 while on active duty, participating in Operation New Life, the Vietnamese evacuation
-a volunteer firefighter and paramedic (followed by three years in the paid fire service) 1973-1983
-a flight medic in the WV Army National Guard
-accepted to Medical School at age 29 at Marshall University
-Emergency Medicine Residency at Akron General Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident
-Commissioned as an Army Officer in 1983, and rose to the rank of Major before leaving the reserves in 1992. As a physician, Dan attended the Army Flight Surgeon course and logged many hours at the controls of various army aircraft.
Dan practiced Emergency Medicine for over 20 years, during which time he received EMS awards and teaching awards in Durham and Greenwood SC. In 2008 he was the co-founder of MedAccess Urgent Care in Roxboro, where he continues to practice medicine today. He has served on 5 trips to Haiti after the earthquake of 2010, and continues to do volunteer service in the community.
